About the role
Sliema Tech Labs Ltd is a growing technology consultancy servicing clients across finance, iGaming and local enterprise from its Sliema/Gżira office. We deliver data-driven solutions, cloud migrations and custom applications for a mix of Maltese and international customers.
The Database Developer (T-SQL) will work within a small data engineering team to build and maintain robust SQL Server databases, write efficient stored procedures and views, and ensure high performance for both OLTP and reporting workloads. You will collaborate closely with developers, BI analysts and operations to implement ETL/ELT processes and support deployments.
This is a hybrid role offering a balance of remote work and on-site days in Sliema. The position is suitable for an experienced T-SQL developer who enjoys problem-solving, performance tuning and producing clear documentation. There are opportunities for training, certification and exposure to cloud database platforms (Azure SQL / AWS RDS) as the business expands.

Key responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain T-SQL code: stored procedures, functions, views and triggers for MS SQL Server databases.
- Analyse and optimise query performance, implement indexing strategies and resolve blocking/locking issues.
- Develop and support ETL/ELT processes using SSIS, Azure Data Factory or equivalent tools.
- Collaborate with application developers and BI analysts to ensure reliable data models and reporting performance.
- Create and maintain database documentation, data dictionaries and runbooks for operational processes.
- Implement backup, recovery and maintenance plans; work with ops to monitor database health and capacity.
- Participate in code reviews, performance testing and deployment activities as part of CI/CD pipelines.
- Investigate and resolve production incidents, providing timely root-cause analysis and remediation.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years hands-on experience developing with T-SQL and Microsoft SQL Server (2016+ preferred).
- Strong knowledge of query optimisation, indexing, execution plans and performance troubleshooting.
- Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT jobs (SSIS, ADF or similar) and working with relational data models.
- Familiarity with backup/restore procedures, maintenance plans and basic DBA duties.
- Comfortable using source control (Git) and participating in CI/CD workflows for database deployments.
- Good English communication skills; ability to liaise with cross-functional teams and document work clearly.
- Legal right to work in Malta (EU/EEA or valid Maltese work permit where applicable).

Work schedule
Typical week: Monday to Friday, standard office hours with hybrid flexibility and occasional on-call support for critical incidents.
