DevOps Engineer (AWS/Kubernetes)
About the role
Sliema Tech Labs is a growing cloud-native consultancy and product engineering team based on the Sliema–Gżira seafront. We work with international clients across fintech, iGaming and SaaS to design, build and operate resilient cloud platforms. Our teams combine Malta-based engineers with remote specialists across Europe.
As a DevOps Engineer you will be embedded in feature teams and take ownership of the platform that runs customer workloads. Day-to-day responsibilities include building and maintaining Kubernetes clusters on AWS, implementing IaC using Terraform, automating CI/CD pipelines, improving monitoring and incident response, and working closely with developers to ship reliable services.

Key responsibilities
- Design, deploy and operate Kubernetes clusters (EKS or self-managed) and related infrastructure on AWS.
- Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform (or CloudFormation) and modular patterns.
- Build and improve CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins) for reliable application delivery.
- Automate operational tasks, backups, rollbacks and release processes to improve mean time to recovery.
- Instrument services with monitoring and alerting (Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch) and run incident response.
- Collaborate with developers on application architecture, containerisation and performance tuning.
- Manage container runtime, networking, ingress controllers, service meshes and secrets management.
- Perform cost optimisation, capacity planning and security hardening for cloud resources.
- Maintain clear runbooks, architecture diagrams and documentation for platform components.
Requirements
- Minimum 3 years experience in a DevOps, SRE or cloud engineering role.
- Practical experience with AWS core services (EC2, EKS, RDS, VPC, IAM, S3, CloudWatch).
- Hands-on Kubernetes experience: deployment, scaling, networking, Helm charts and troubleshooting.
- Strong Linux administration skills and scripting (Python, Bash or similar).
- Experience with Terraform or equivalent IaC tooling and versioned module design.
- Familiarity with CI/CD tooling (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins) and container build pipelines.
- Good understanding of networking, security best practices and logging/monitoring stacks.
- Fluent English (written and spoken); ability to document and communicate technical designs.
- Right to work in Malta (candidates requiring sponsorship should note visa processes may apply).

Work schedule
Typical week: Monday to Friday, core hours with flexibility; occasional evenings or weekends for incident support on a rota.
- Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30 (core hours flexible)
- On-call rotation: one week every 6–8 weeks (handovers and incident support)
- Occasional out-of-hours work for major deployments or incident recovery
