About the role

Sliema Fintech Solutions Ltd is a Malta-based fintech company servicing European payment rails and digital financial services. The finance team is compact and collaborative, supporting operations, compliance and investor reporting across multiple legal entities.

As Financial Controller you will own month-end close, statutory reporting, budgeting and cash-flow forecasting while improving internal controls and financial systems. You will line-manage a small accounts team and work closely with operations, compliance and the founders to translate financial data into clear business insights.

This is a high-impact role suited to someone who enjoys variety — from reconciliations and audit coordination to financial modelling and process improvement. The position offers exposure to cross-border payments, opportunities to influence systems selection (ERP/BI) and a hybrid work pattern with core office days in Sliema.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead month-end close processes, prepare consolidated management accounts and commentary for the executive team.
  • Prepare statutory financial statements and coordinate with external auditors for annual audits.
  • Manage cash flow forecasting, working capital and treasury operations across entities.
  • Oversee VAT, payroll and tax compliance in coordination with external advisors.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls, accounting policies and SOX-lite procedures suitable for a regulated fintech environment.
  • Line-manage and develop a small accounting team; allocate tasks and review deliverables.
  • Support budgeting, monthly forecasting and long-range financial modelling for product and commercial planning.
  • Drive improvements in finance systems (ERP, reporting tools) and automations to increase efficiency.

Requirements

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.
  • Qualified accountant (ACCA, ACA, CIMA or equivalent) with at least 5 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Minimum 3–4 years' experience in a senior accounting/controller role; fintech, payments or financial services experience preferred.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge (IFRS), month-end close and statutory reporting experience.
  • Proven experience with ERP systems (e.g. NetSuite, Xero, or similar) and advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience managing a small finance team and coordinating external auditors and advisors.
  • Excellent English communication skills (written and verbal); Maltese language skills are beneficial but not essential.
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Malta.

Work schedule

Typical week: Monday to Friday, standard office hours with hybrid flexibility and occasional extended hours during month-end close.

  • Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30
  • Core hours on office days: 10:00–15:00
  • Occasional after-hours for month-end and audit coordination
