The Head of Data will own the end-to-end data strategy and lead a multi-disciplinary team of data engineers, analysts and data scientists. You will design and deliver scalable data platforms (cloud-first), establish data governance and quality processes, and partner closely with product, engineering and commercial teams to turn data into measurable business outcomes.
This role suits a strategic, hands-on leader who enjoys building teams and systems from first principles while still contributing technically when required. Key responsibilities
- Develop and own the company-wide data strategy, roadmap and KPIs aligned to business objectives.
- Lead, mentor and grow a team of data engineers, analysts and data scientists; recruit as required.
- Design and implement scalable ETL/ELT pipelines and cloud data architectures (data lake/warehouse).
- Establish data governance, quality standards and documentation; ensure compliance with GDPR and company policies.
- Collaborate with product, engineering and commercial teams to prioritise analytics and ML use-cases that deliver measurable ROI.
- Oversee production ML deployments and ensure observability, monitoring and model governance.
- Manage vendor relationships and third-party data providers; evaluate tooling and platforms.
- Define and report on senior-level dashboards and insights for executive stakeholders.
- Control departmental budget and contribute to strategic planning and cross-functional initiatives.
Requirements
- Minimum 7+ years of experience in data roles with at least 3 years in a leadership position.
- Proven experience designing cloud-based data architectures (AWS, GCP or Azure) and modern data warehouses (e.g. Snowflake, BigQuery, Redshift).
- Strong technical skills in SQL, Python (or R), ETL/ELT frameworks and orchestration tools (Airflow, dbt, etc.).
- Demonstrable experience building and delivering analytics, BI and machine learning solutions to production.
- Solid understanding of data governance, GDPR and data privacy best practices.
- Excellent stakeholder management, communication and strategic planning skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Statistics, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- Eligible to work in Malta.

Work schedule
Typical week: Monday to Friday, standard office hours with hybrid flexibility and occasional after-hours collaboration for major deliverables.
- Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30
- Core collaboration hours: 10:00–16:00
- Occasional remote work days and evening sessions for cross-border stakeholder meetings
