Network Security Engineer

About the role

Valletta Cyber Defence Ltd is a Malta-based cybersecurity and managed services provider working with clients across fintech, iGaming and enterprise sectors. We combine deep technical expertise with local presence to deliver security, compliance and resilient network architectures.

The Network Security Engineer will join a compact security team responsible for network security architecture, firewall and VPN administration, SIEM tuning, incident response and automation. You will work closely with client IT teams and internal engineers to harden networks, run vulnerability assessments and respond to security incidents.

This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys hands-on configuration as well as strategic planning. We offer exposure to international clients, certification support, a hybrid working model and opportunities to progress into senior security architect or consultancy roles.

Key responsibilities

• Design, implement and maintain network security solutions including next-generation firewalls, VPNs and segmentation
• Administer and tune SIEM platforms (e.g. Splunk, Elastic) and manage IDS/IPS systems
• Perform network vulnerability assessments, penetration test coordination and remediation follow-up
• Lead incident response for network-related security events and produce post-incident reports
• Develop and maintain network security policies, standards and runbooks
• Collaborate with cloud and infrastructure teams to secure AWS/Azure network components and hybrid connectivity
• Automate repeatable tasks using scripts and configuration management tooling
• Manage vendor relationships for security appliances, firmware updates and support contracts
• Document network architectures, change-control records and security configurations

Requirements

• 3+ years' hands-on experience in network or network security engineering
• Practical experience with firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco Firepower or similar)
• Experience managing SIEM, IDS/IPS and VPN technologies
• Strong understanding of TCP/IP, routing, switching, MPLS, BGP and related protocols
• Scripting ability (Python, Bash or PowerShell) for automation and monitoring tasks
• Familiarity with Linux and network troubleshooting tools (tcpdump, Wireshark)
• Relevant degree or equivalent demonstrable experience in IT/Network/Security
• Fluent English (working language); Maltese a plus
• Eligible to work in Malta
