About the role

Sliema Tech Labs Ltd is a growing software house specialising in bespoke web applications and integrations for clients across fintech, iGaming and professional services. We combine a compact Maltese engineering team with remote product stakeholders across Europe.

The PHP Developer (Symfony) will work within a small backend team, taking ownership of feature development, maintenance and performance tuning of Symfony-based applications. You will collaborate closely with frontend developers, DevOps and product owners to deliver high-quality code and reliable APIs.

This role is ideal for an engineer with 3+ years of PHP development experience and a solid working knowledge of Symfony (4/5/6). Key responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain backend services using PHP and the Symfony framework (4/5/6).
  • Implement and document RESTful APIs consumed by frontend applications and third-party integrations.
  • Write automated tests (unit and integration) and participate in code reviews to maintain quality.
  • Collaborate with product owners, frontend engineers and DevOps to deliver features on time.
  • Investigate and resolve bugs, performance issues and production incidents.
  • Contribute to architecture discussions, propose improvements and help shape technical standards.
  • Maintain project documentation, deployment scripts and assist with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Mentor junior developers and support knowledge-sharing within the team.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years professional experience in PHP development with hands-on Symfony experience.
  • Strong knowledge of OOP principles, design patterns and modern PHP (7.4+ / 8.x).
  • Experience building and consuming REST APIs, and working with relational databases (MySQL/Postgres).
  • Familiarity with Composer, Git, PHPUnit (or similar testing frameworks) and debugging tools.
  • Experience with SQL performance tuning and understanding of caching strategies (Redis, Memcached).
  • Good command of English (working language); Maltese is a plus but not required.
  • Right to work in Malta or ability to secure Maltese/EU work authorisation (candidates should be able to start within a reasonable notice period).
  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail and ability to work in a small fast-paced team.

Work schedule

Typical week: Monday to Friday, standard office days with hybrid flexibility and occasional client meetings outside core hours.

  • Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30
  • Core hours: 10:00–16:00 (flexible start/end outside core)
  • Typical hybrid arrangement: 3 in-office days, 2 remote days per week
  • Occasional after-hours on-call or deployments during releases
