About the role
Sliema Tech Labs is a growing Maltese software house serving clients across fintech, iGaming and e‑commerce. We combine product-minded engineering with pragmatic delivery and are expanding our backend team to support new projects and ongoing product development.
You will work closely with product managers, front-end engineers and DevOps to design, build and maintain RESTful APIs and backend services using Ruby on Rails. The role involves writing well-tested, maintainable code, participating in code reviews, owning features from design through deployment and helping improve our development practices.

Key responsibilities
- Design and implement backend features and RESTful APIs using Ruby on Rails.
- Write automated tests (unit, integration) and maintain test coverage.
- Participate in architectural discussions and propose scalable solutions.
- Fix bugs and optimise performance in existing codebases.
- Collaborate with front-end engineers to integrate APIs and refine endpoints.
- Follow and improve CI/CD pipelines and deployment practices (Docker, GitHub Actions).
- Conduct and participate in code reviews and mentor junior developers.
- Document systems and ensure clear handover of features to operations.
Requirements
- Minimum 2+ years of professional Ruby on Rails experience in production environments.
- Strong understanding of RESTful API design and JSON-based integrations.
- Experience with PostgreSQL or other relational databases and writing efficient queries.
- Proficiency with Git and collaborative branching workflows.
- Familiarity with automated testing frameworks (RSpec, Minitest) and TDD practices.
- Experience using Docker and basic container-based development workflows.
- Good communication skills in English; ability to work in a cross-functional team.
- Eligibility to work in Malta or able to secure work authorization (employers can assist where plausible).

Work schedule
Typical week: Monday to Friday, core office days with hybrid flexibility; occasional on-call or release support during deployments.
- Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30 (core hours 10:00–16:00)
- Remote days: flexible within core hours
- Occasional after-hours release or incident support (planned in advance)
