About the role
Valletta Payments Solutions Ltd is a fast-growing Maltese fintech specialising in payment orchestration and PSP integrations for European merchants and iGaming operators. We combine cloud-native engineering with strict regulatory and security standards to deliver resilient payment flows and reconciliation services.
This Tech Lead will own the payments technical roadmap, mentor developers and work closely with product, security and operations to ensure uptime, compliance and performance. You will be hands-on in architecture, code reviews and integrations (PSPs, acquiring banks, risk engines) while also shaping delivery and incident response practices.
The role is based in our hybrid Sliema/Gżira office hub with flexibility for focused remote days. It suits an experienced backend engineer with payments domain knowledge and leadership experience who wants to scale products used across multiple European markets and contribute to an inclusive, collaborative Maltese tech culture.

Key responsibilities
- Lead design and delivery of payment platform components, including payment orchestration, routing and reconciliation services
- Architect and implement secure integrations with PSPs (e.g. Adyen, Stripe, Checkout.com), acquirers and banking APIs
- Own technical roadmap for payments, prioritising reliability, scalability and regulatory compliance (PSD2, SCA, PCI considerations)
- Manage, mentor and grow a small engineering team; conduct code reviews and set technical standards
- Collaborate with product, QA and operations to define SLAs, incident response and monitoring strategies
- Drive CI/CD best practices, automated testing and deployment pipelines for critical services
- Investigate and resolve production incidents, performing root-cause analysis and implementing preventative measures
- Ensure clear technical documentation and secure handling of sensitive payment data
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of backend engineering experience with at least 2 years in a tech lead or senior engineer role
- Proven experience building payment integrations and knowledge of payment flows (authorisation, settlement, refunds, chargebacks)
- Strong programming skills in at least one backend language used in the company (Node.js, Java or Go preferred)
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP or Azure), containerisation (Docker) and orchestration (Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with API design (REST/JSON), message queues (Kafka/RabbitMQ) and relational/noSQL databases
- Working knowledge of security and compliance considerations for payments (basic PCI DSS awareness, PSD2 / SCA concepts)
- Excellent communication skills in English and ability to work in a bilingual Maltese/English environment
- Eligible to work in Malta (citizenship or valid work authorization)

Work schedule
Typical week: Monday to Friday standard office hours with hybrid flexibility and an on-call rotation for critical incidents (occasional after-hours support).
- Standard office hours: 09:00–17:30
- Core collaboration hours: 10:00–16:00
- On-call rota: one week per month (rotation with senior engineers)
